The flyer read:

“Celebrating the Life and Legacy of Yogi Bhajan, The Siri Singh Sahib of Sikh Dharma.”

The event was to be held on Saturday, August 26, 2017 at the kundalini yoga founder’s retreat in Española, New Mexico—an estate he affectionately named, Hacienda de Guru Ram Das, in honor of his spiritual teacher and mentor.

I was on my way there.

But first, let’s get back to waiting for Jack under the Jacaranda trees in June 2017.

What was I doing waiting for an ex-boyfriend of 16 years prior, who I previously had no interest in contacting?

Well, my life was falling apart in June 2017. My husband of two years had filed for divorce in June 2017. This was the year after my mom died and I quit my job. Which was the year after we got married and had a second baby. Which was the year after my sister died while I was pregnant with our first baby. Which was the year after I somehow wandered into (and got stuck in) Anchorage, Alaska (of all places).

Oh yeah, my dog died somewhere in there too.

In June 2017, I went back to San Diego to remember the younger version of myself that I had somehow left behind. I wanted to see Jack because he was an instigator. I was under crisis and I wanted/needed to be instigated.

Jack had information about me that I had forgotten. Jack knew the me who intentionally pushed the boundaries of her own comfort zone for mental and emotional freedom from the social judgments and paradigms that were all vying against me.

Jack knew the me who was willing to be embarrassed in front of people my own age and freak out the mother of my own children.

And she/me was definitely freaking out.

Jack reminded me to freak out for the sake of paradigm shifting. Jack reminded me to freak out for the sake of disrupting the social norm of convenience and necessity to alter fashion forward thinking from consumer lack/supply and demand mentality to the luxury of grace.

The luxury of grace.
